About Discernment Wealth Academy
Most people are not bad with money. They have simply never had financial ideas explained clearly, without judgement, jargon or pressure to buy something. Discernment Wealth Academy was created to help change that.
Why I built it
I spent more than twenty years working in the NHS across carer support, equality and diversity, service management and family-focused practice. Training in systemic family therapy also shaped how I understand people, relationships and change.
One example I am genuinely proud of. In my work supporting carers, I helped a good number of them successfully apply for respite grants, real financial support they were entitled to, but that a form, a process, or simply not knowing where to look, would otherwise have kept out of reach. Nobody taught them to feel foolish for not already knowing the system. I just helped them find their way through it.
I also served on the committee of the Leeds Christian Community Trust, helping consider how available funding could best support faith and community organisations, and on the management committee of another third sector organisation, weighing decisions about staff funding, fixed assets and where to invest surplus each year. Working out where a limited amount of money does the most genuine good, across so many real, worthwhile calls on it, taught me more about actual financial discernment than any qualification could have.
Discernment Wealth Academy exists for the same reason. Most people are not bad with money. They have simply never had anyone sit with them and explain it without judgement, jargon, or an angle to sell. That is what this site is for.
Why Ecclesiastes 11:2
"Give a portion to seven, and also to eight; for thou knowest not what evil shall be upon the earth."
Ecclesiastes 11:2, KJV
This verse is not really about money on the surface. It is about a much older kind of wisdom, that we genuinely do not know what is coming, and the sensible response to that uncertainty is not paralysis, and it is not a single confident bet either. It is dividing what you have, deliberately, into seven portions, and then an eighth, so that no single misfortune can take everything at once.
That is, almost exactly, the actual shape of sound financial thinking. Building an emergency fund before taking investment risk. Addressing priority debts and costly borrowing before pursuing investment growth. Avoiding unnecessary dependence on one account, asset or source of income. None of the Foundations on this site are really new ideas. They are a very old piece of wisdom, given today's vocabulary.
It is also, I have come to realise, exactly what those committees were doing every time they met. Faith and community groups, services, staff, fixed assets, future funding, surplus to invest, never quite enough to cover everything fully, always a genuine decision about where each portion should go, and where an eighth should go too, without knowing in advance which one would turn out to matter most. Discernment, in the end, is the same skill wherever it is practised.
Discernment, not dependence
The word in the name is chosen carefully. Discernment is not a shortcut, and it is not a guru promising certainty where none exists. It is the ability to look at your own situation clearly enough to make your own decision, and to keep being able to do that, long after any single course or lesson has ended.
You may have noticed that every lesson on this site ends with a question rather than an instruction. That is deliberate. Over a number of years, I have developed a genuine skill for asking the right question, the one that actually helps someone move forward, or simply see their own position more clearly, rather than being told what to think. This site is built the same way. My role is to help you see clearly enough to decide for yourself, not to decide for you.
That is why the core Foundations learning will remain free permanently. Optional workbooks, live support and advanced programmes may be paid, but the starting point most people need never will be. You are welcome here whatever your starting point, and whatever your relationship with money has been so far.
